Their Words Are Not Your Responsibility

You know that moment when someone says something that stings?
It could be a rude driver yelling from their car window.
A co-worker making a sharp comment in a meeting.
Or even a loved one letting frustration slip in the heat of the moment.

The words hit you like a punch. And without even trying, you carry them with you the rest of the day.

You replay them. You wonder if they’re true.

They’re not….

Their words are not your responsibility.

What someone else says isn’t a reflection of your value. It’s a reflection of their own struggle

Think about it.

A driver cuts you off and yells. Did you really cause their bad day? Or were they already carrying stress before you crossed paths?

The words may be directed at you, but they weren’t really about you.

The Bible tells us to guard our hearts.

Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Guarding your heart means choosing carefully what voices you allow to take root inside of you.

You don’t have to accept every careless opinion or every passing insult. Some words were never meant to stay with you.

Their words do not define your worth.

You are who God says you are. You are chosen, loved, and redeemed. That truth doesn’t change because someone else is careless with their tongue.

So the next time someone throws negativity your way, pause and remind yourself:

Those words don’t belong to me.
That pain is theirs to carry, not mine.
I refuse to let their voice drown out God’s truth about me.

People will always have opinions. Some will encourage, and some will tear down. But at the end of the day, you get to decide which ones take root.

Their words are not your responsibility.

Guard your heart, and let God’s Word be the loudest voice you hear.
