The Danger of Snapping at Illusions

Chasing illusions through envy and comparison causes us to lose what’s real. God calls us to embrace contentment, trust His provision, and treasure the blessings already in our hands.

There’s an old fable about a dog who found a bone.

Proud of his prize, he carried it in his mouth as he walked along. When he came to a stream, he looked down and saw his reflection in the water.

In his mind, it wasn’t a reflection at all. It looked like another dog carrying another bone. Greedy for more, he snapped at the “other” dog, opening his mouth to bark.

The bone slipped from his teeth, fell into the water, and disappeared.

In chasing after an illusion, he lost the blessing he already had.

Chasing shadows often costs us what is real.

How many times have we done the same?

We see what others have (possessions, influence, relationships, success), and we convince ourselves we need more.

We let envy, comparison, or greed whisper that what God has already given us isn’t enough.

And in the process, we risk losing the very blessings He’s placed in our hands.

Hebrews 13:5 reminds us: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’”

Contentment is not laziness or settling for less.
Contentment is recognizing the goodness of what God has already provided and trusting that His presence is better than anything the world promises.

Real blessing is found in God’s presence.

He is the gift that cannot be lost, the treasure that doesn’t fade, and the only One who satisfies fully.

So hold tightly to what is real.
Be grateful for what God has already entrusted to you.
Don’t trade it away for an illusion that was never there.

Chasing shadows will always cost you the blessing you already hold.
