A Cord of Three Strands

The fable of the bundle of sticks teaches us that unity multiplies strength. Alone we are fragile, but together—in Christ—we are unbreakable.

There’s an old fable about a father who had several sons who were constantly quarreling. Tired of their fighting, he decided to teach them a lesson.

He gathered a bundle of sticks, tied them tightly together, and handed them to his sons.

“Break this,” he said. Each one tried with all his strength, but none could snap the bundle.

Then the father untied the sticks and gave them out one by one. This time, each son easily broke his stick in half.

“You see,” the father said, “individually you are weak. But together, you are strong.”

Unity multiplies strength. Division multiplies weakness.

It’s easy to think we’re strong on our own when the truth is, a single stick can’t withstand much pressure. But when bound together with others, it becomes unbreakable.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 puts it this way: “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

We were created to walk with others, to encourage, protect, and strengthen one another.

That’s why the church is called the body of Christ. Each part has a role, and each part needs the others to function fully.

Your strength is multiplied when you stand with others.

Maybe you’re carrying a burden that feels too heavy alone. Or maybe you’ve been tempted to withdraw, to isolate, to convince yourself you don’t need anyone else. But that’s not how God designed you.

We need each other’s prayers. Each other’s encouragement. Each other’s accountability. Each other’s presence.

When one is weak, another can lift them up.
When one falls, another can help them rise.
When one stick feels ready to snap, the bundle keeps it secure.

Don’t try to live life as a single strand.

Bind yourself to community.
Invest in friendships that build you up.
Lean into the church, the body of Christ, and remember this: you may be fragile on your own, but together, in Christ, you are unbreakable.
