When Friends Hold You Up

Even Moses needed Aaron and Hur to hold up his arms. True victory comes not from standing alone but from walking in God’s design for community.

A few days ago, I met with some friends I hadn’t seen in a while. At first, it was all laughs and superficial catch-up. But then one of them began sharing how his life had really been going this year..

His faith was shaken.
His marriage had ended.
His world had been turned upside down.

As we listened, I couldn’t help but put my hand on his shoulder, a silent way of saying, “I’m here for you.” Then came a hug, the kind that says more than words ever could.

That moment reminded me of the beauty of friendship:

When life is too heavy to carry alone, someone else steps in to hold you up.

Just like the story of Moses.

In Exodus 17, the Israelites were in battle against the Amalekites. Joshua led the men in the valley, while Moses stood on a hill overlooking the fight, staff in hand.

As long as Moses kept the staff raised, the Israelites were winning. But when his arms grew tired and dropped, the enemy began to prevail.

Moses couldn’t do it alone. His strength was failing.

That’s when Aaron and Hur stepped in. They rolled a stone under him to sit, and then each held up one of his arms. Together, they kept his staff raised until sunset. And with their help, the Israelites won the battle.

Some days you’re Moses. Other days you’re Aaron or Hur.

We all face battles that drain us. Work pressures, family struggles, fears we can’t shake…

In those moments, God often sends friends to strengthen us, to remind us we don’t have to fight alone.

An encouraging word, a prayer on your behalf, a friend who steps in and lifts you when you can’t lift yourself.

So don’t be afraid to lean on your friends when your arms grow weary. And don’t hesitate to step in when theirs do.

Because some days we’re Moses. Some days we’re Aaron or Hur. And together, we can stand strong.
