Adversity doesn’t break you—it builds you. Life’s struggles are the boiling water, but with God’s strength, you can transform like the coffee bean, creating hope and change.
A young woman once went to her mother, overwhelmed by life’s struggles. Her job was demanding, her friendships were strained, and her prayers felt unanswered. She confessed she was ready to give up.
Her mother listened, then took her into the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and set them to boil. Into the first she placed carrots, into the second eggs, and into the third coffee beans.
After some time, she lifted each out and asked her daughter, “What do you see?”
“Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied.
But her mother explained:
This story shows the same adversity. But three very different results.
Life’s struggles are the boiling water. They will come for all of us. The question is: who will you be in the heat?
The Bible says in James 1:2–4: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
Hardship is unavoidable. But our response is what determines whether we come out weaker, harder, or transformed for the better.
Jesus promised that in this world, we would have trouble (John 16:33). The “heat” of life—stress, pain, loss, disappointment—will touch every person.
Now, you don’t get to choose the water, but you do get to choose your response.
Don’t let hardship weaken you. Don’t let bitterness harden you. Instead, with God’s strength, be like the coffee bean: transform the atmosphere with faith, resilience, and hope.
