Be Careful Who You Pretend To Be

Authenticity is not effortless—it’s a sacred commitment to truth. When we align who we are with who God created us to be, we find lasting peace.

Lately, I've been reflecting on this quote from Kurt Vonnegut:

"We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be."

Man… That strikes a deeper note.

Think about the roles you step into each day.

Every decision, every interaction shapes who you’re becoming.

The person you present to the world gradually becomes who you really are.

That’s a scary thought…

Growth requires courage, humility, and truthfulness.

We often admire people who seem effortlessly authentic, but authenticity is challenging.

It demands the courage to admit when our public persona doesn’t match our private reality. I’ve watched countless leaders, athletes, and entrepreneurs navigate this.

Real authenticity isn’t about impressing others; it’s about consistently aligning our actions with our core values.

Proverbs 11:3 beautifully underscores this truth: "The integrity of the upright guides them."

When our public lives mirror our private beliefs, true freedom emerges. Pretending may jump-start motivation, but integrity is what sustains genuine growth.

Your growth might unsettle others, but never shrink your truth to fit their comfort.

Social consistency can become a cage if you let it. It's easy to get locked into a version of yourself that no longer fits.

Remember Alex O’Connor? He boldly embraced veganism only to publicly acknowledge his struggle when his health declined.

He chose honesty, even at a cost.
He faced backlash, criticism, and judgment…
But he refused to live a lie for the sake of approval.

Authenticity takes courage, but it also leads to profound strength.

James 1:2-4 tells us to consider trials pure joy because the testing of faith develops perseverance. Perseverance shapes character, and character brings hope.

In other words, growth isn’t just about becoming better; it’s about becoming resilient and anchored in something bigger than the opinions of others.

Your journey of personal growth is between you and God.

Personal growth is sacred. Don’t sacrifice it on the altar of external validation.

Set goals, yes.
Commit boldly, yes.
But remember, your identity isn't tethered to others' expectations; it's anchored in your faith and purpose.

Today, commit to authenticity.
Live in alignment.
And become who God created you to be.
